White Sands National Park Destination
On May 27, 2021 by OliviaWhile you may or may not have heard of White Sands National Park, it’s an incredible place located in New Mexico. The USA is known for its many natural landmarks that are wonderful and incredible, and this area is no exception. The land is named for the same color dunes, which are that color due to gypsum crystals.
Since you probably haven’t heard much about this place from friends and family, this article will go over some unique features that this park offers compared to others. Much of the appeal comes from visiting and taking in all the sights in the area, including the wildlife.
White Sands National Park
This area was only recently established as a national park on December 20, 2019, but it has long been signed as a national monument since January 18, 1933. That makes it one of the oldest landmarks in the country, though still fairly recent compared to others. It’s not one of the most popular destinations, making it a much less crowded area for activities and visitation.
Even though the massive dune fields make it seem like the land is mostly barren of animals and wildlife, many different species live in this park. This includes various types of flora, including the skunkbush sumac, cane cholla cacti, soaptree yucca, Indian ricegrass, and Rio Grande cottonwood. That makes quite a sight to see when visiting.

Additionally, there are also various lizards, insects, and birds that inhabit this place. This includes the bleached earless lizard, bleached skimmer dragonfly, white-lined sphinx moth, Ash-throated flycatcher, etc. Mammals include the black-tailed jackrabbits, pallid bats, pocket gophers, and more. These probably aren’t the typical animals that you’d see in your backyard.
The location is a fairly popular place for filming and photography, making it great for taking your own pictures and films to share with your family and friends. The same can be said for the more western part of the country, which has historically been a popular destination for early movies featuring cowboys, bank robbers, and those looking for gold.
In Conclusion
There are as many as 600,000 tourists that come to this area each year, making it the most popular destination in New Mexico. Most people visit during the summer and spring months, but this isn’t recommended if you want to avoid large crowds and the sweltering heat. With its natural beauty, it’s a great place to visit, even during the winter and fall months.
